One of the great things about yoga is the fact that it doesn’t need a big gym, nor does it need any complicated apparatus or expensive devices. It is possible to do yoga at home, without any implements or equipment. To get the best out of your home yoga routine, keep the following in mind:
Choose the right time
Perhaps the best time for you could be early in the morning before the rest of the household has woken up. It could be that the time after everyone has left the house for school/work is the best time for you. Evening time – when others may choose to go for a walk or make a trip to the gym – seems to also suit a lot of people. In other words, the right time is the time that suits you, when you are most likely to devote time to yourself, and do your yoga with concentration and commitment without disturbances and distractions.
Choose the right place
Though a garden with grass below and trees above may feel and sound lovely, indoors works just as well for yoga. Choose any flat open area in the home, on your balcony or terrace or even a close by park where you are unlikely to be interrupted and where you can stretch out fully without bumping into furniture or other hindrances.
Get comfortable
Choose a good quality non-slip yoga mat which will lightly cushion your limbs. It should be large enough for your requirements and can be a cheerful color of your choice that will help enhance your yoga practice as well as your mood. Wear breathable clothes that fit well – not tight or constricting, but not too loose either. Keep a hand towel close at hand if the weather is hot or if you tend to sweat a lot.
Create the right atmosphere
It helps to be surrounded by colors that you like. Maybe it is the natural green of a park or on your balcony or the soothing colors of the walls of your house. It can be a good idea to add a few potted plants to the area where you do your yoga practice, maybe some attractive posters for inspiration, maybe even a lamp. If you like you can choose some inspirational quotes as wall art or pick an attractive painting which will help you focus when you do your meditation. While natural light can be great for your yoga workout, warm and attractive indoor lighting can help create a lovely atmosphere just as easily.
You can add to the atmosphere by playing some soothing instrumental music, listening to some vedic chants or simply listen to the ‘Aum’ intonation. I have a friend who listens to the taanpura while doing yoga – she told me about a simple mobile taanpura app that she uses. You can also enhance the whole experience by lighting up a diffuser with some essential oils or even simply lighting some of your favorite incense sticks, dhoop or agarbatti. Maybe you have some more, even better ideas to create the right atmosphere for your yoga practice at home – I do hope I have given you a few to get started.
