This is a question I am often asked by those who attend my yoga class, my friends and those who follow me on social media: what should one wear when doing yoga? Well of course the simple answer is, whatever makes one feel comfortable. However, there are a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind about what to wear and what not to wear when doing yoga, particularly when attending a group yoga class.
What to wear for yoga class
Wear natural, breathable materials – This is a good idea for any kind of activity because it allows the skin to breathe and function normally without constricting the pores. It is a good idea to wear natural fabrics rather than synthetics since they are more skin friendly and less likely to cause irritation.
Wear the right size – Your yoga workout gear should be neither too tight nor too loose. It should be the right size for your body and shape and should be appropriate for the sort of class you attend. Whatever you wear – whether its tights, t-shirt, track pants, tank top etc. – it should fit you properly. It should not pinch or constrict you, nor should it slip or slide off. Remember, some aasans may cause the pants to ride up or a t-shirt to roll down from the waist (any legs in the air position will do this). Clothes that mould/ skim but are not skin tight are best.
Wear clothes that allow full range of motion – Yoga is all about improving flexibility and balance; as such it puts the limbs through a wide range of motions. The clothes should ideally have some amount of stretch to let you bend and stretch without restricting you. For ladies, the right size of bra with adequate coverage and support is important while doing yoga. Remember, what is okay for walking down the road may not work quite as well when you’re trying to stand on your head!
What about shoes and socks – yoga is best done barefoot because this gives you a feel of the earth beneath. This connection with the earth is important. Moreover it improves balance and prevents slipping. Shoes will actually hamper several types of yoga poses. However, if one wants to wear socks during yoga they can do so. In fact there are special socks available that are designed for yoga.
Dress for the weather – If your yoga class is in a hot place like Mumbai, have a small towel at hand or consider a headband /wristband to soak up the sweat. And remember, dark colours are better when sweating since light coloured items are more likely to become see-through.
What not to wear for yoga class
No need to dress to impress – If you feel like wearing clothes that make you feel good about yourself, by all means choose items that are flattering to your form. No harm in getting a little boost in self-confidence. However remember, in yoga everyone is concentrating on their own efforts. They are not really interested in what others wear. Rather than dressing trendily, wear that which is appropriate, comfortable and right for you.
Pass on thin, flimsy materials and the itsy bitsy clothing – Some yoga poses may reveal more than you want with the wrong clothing choice. So, pass on the super-short shorts or off shoulder tees – they could be uncomfortable and they may actually be inappropriate for class. Flimsy materials are apt to give way and could be embarrassingly see-thru. It is a good idea to take into account how others dress in your yoga class.
In the end it is all about what keeps you comfortable and what you feel good in. There is no single set of rules for yoga clothes. However, the above dos and don’ts may be good to keep in mind if you’re shopping for yoga workout gear.
